Intellectual property

Intellectual property is any creation (e.g. an invention or design) with commercial value that can be protected through a legal right such as copyright, trademark or patent. A legal right allows the creator to prevent unauthorised use of their invention.

Some rights (such as a patent or trademark) have to be registered by the UK Patent Office before they are valid. Others (such as copyright) come into effect immediately something is created and do not have to be registered.
